I grew up reading Jerome Holtzman and whoever was writing the Wake column 
back in the early 60's.  I don't get the Chicago papers (and don't even check
their websites very often), but I will agree that insight seem to have take 
a back seat to 'controversy' among more than a few columnists.  

Here in Nebraska, one of the more insightful writers made the mistake of 
(incorrectly) predicting Nebraska would lose a key football game a number 
of years ago.  He was the odd man out in the next round of staff cutbacks 
at the paper.  No reflection on his prediction, of course.  :-)
