This discussion has raised a question - has there been a columnist, currently or somewhat recently (Grantland Rice doesn't count) - who has made any of us more likely to pick up the paper that day ?? A writer with insight and analysis that you looked forward to every few days ?
I have to admit Chicago has seemed pretty devoid of talent lately (though I do enjoy some of the beat writers - our own Jim O'Donnell, Mike Mulligan on the Bears, NU's Bill Jauss back in the day).
I can't remember a Chicago columnist that I looked forward to reading/enjoying since Bernie Lincicome and Bob Verdi at the Tribune, or Ray Sons at the Sun-Times.? I guess that was the era before 'shouting an opinion loudly' was the basis for writing a column.??And don't even ask about Minneapolis/St Paul (my current work location) - I would describe the columnists here as pretty bad.? Even worse, the Pioneer Press?relegated the pennant-racing?Twins to page 11 of the sports section the other day.
Do any other 'good' columnists?come to mind ?
Chuck Herron?? Tech '85??
