> I'll miss the print versions ... but it is fun to get newspapers from across the country and world online for variety.
As long as newspapers provide a cost-effective means of local advertising,
the demise of print versions is still more talk than reality, though it
means the editorial staff could be getting a smaller daily column count
than ever before. I could see also newspapers getting rid of their
out-of-market editions. (Interestingly enough, the New York Times has
been trying to beef up their circulation here in Nebraska, even to doing
phone solicitations. I'm not sure why or how successful they've been.)
I have to admit that for quite a few years my 'national' news source
has been New Jersey Online's AP feed, which is pretty much uncut.
I see stories there that NEVER make the local papers, or that make them
3-4 days later.
At least one of the local supermarket chains has taken to doing all
their weekly sales flyers in the mail. Not particularly coincidental,
this is the chain I'm the least likely to shop in, though there's one
not all that far from us (and closer than one of the stores I regularly
shop at.)
Someone once told me that the most profitable department of the paper is the
classified ads department. What did they teach about newspaper economics
at Medill?
