Definitely gas prices are painful for a decent section of the economy, but that has not changed the driving habits of anybody I know. They still buy the gas wasters and drive walkable/bikeable distances.
Food price inflation is annoying, but not painful for Americans as we spend so little as a percentage of income. I will lend credence to the pain it causes as soon as I see less people at Starbucks.
Personally I believe a lot of the down economy is just panic rather than fundamental weakness. My company(iron foundry) and Maureen's(electronic contract manufacturing) are both booming and on pace for record years. If those of us who are with stable/prosperous companies act scared that is what will really drag the economy down.
I would bet that 99% of the people who attend NU games have in-control mortgages, well-funded 401Ks, stable jobs, and no consumer debt.
I do agree about the cold hot dogs. Yuck!
Chuck wote...
With the country in a recession, the dollar tanking against world currencies, inflation (especially food) surging higher and oil in the neighborhood of $115 a barrel, we should probably be talking sports contraction. The transportation costs for 2008-2009 will be substantially higher than this year. Attendance (in the sports that anybody bothers to attend) figures to be even worse, with $4.00 gas and huge mark-ups on airline tickets.
And are we going to see $6 cold hot dogs in stale buns at Dyche ?
