[Roy Lamberton]

NU lost one of its best known former students in the death of Charlton Heston.

You may have not agreed with his later politics, but there was no finer example
of an actor from the School of Speech in the early 40's than Heston.

He was a big supporter of the School - he reportedly raised a whole bunch of
money in the 50's and 60's for the school but his conversion from political
liberal to conservative really ticked off the powers that be in the school. On
the wall of "Famous Alumni" in Nicolette, his absence really stands out.

In his autobiography he credits the Goldwater campaign for his conversion -
Goldwater had billboards up "In your heart you know he's right," and Heston
reported that he saw one in the summer of 64 every day as he went to a location
on the coast of California. He said in his book that one day he had an epiphany
and changed political sides.

Love his politics or hate them, Charlton Heston was one of NU's leading faces on
the silver screen. At least now we'll get to see a few more of his movies.

He never formally graduated from NU, but his official obit by the AP reports
that he attended the Northwestern University School of Speech!

Just like I did.
