Wow - hearing all this basketball recruiting talk makes me realize that we lose out on all aspects of the basketball experience -
?
The past...nobody at NU today will have basketball memories even as 'passably ok' as my memories of the Rich Falk team that made the NIT, or Ricky Birdsong's 'walk on the wild side'.? All they'll have is forgotten boring games featuring nameless players.? I still remember beating Digger Phelps in the NIT, getting robbed by Ray Meyer, putting up a good fight against Xavier...
?
The present...postseason basketball is a national craze, but we at NU have come to accept that BC will never see a postseason - probably not even an NIT at the rate he is going.?
The future...other schools and alums get to follow the hunt for the hot recruits, to see how their recruiting class fared against the rest of the Big 10.? We always end up number 11, with no big names, no good stories in the paper, nothing really.? Our message board fills up with Minnesota/Wisconsin recruiting talk and IU coach/AD talk, and all we really have to talk about is where will we watch opening-round tournament games in 2009 - because we know NU will be on the sidelines.
If Bill Carmody had any character or self-respect, he would step down immediately after such an horrific tenure as basketball coach, and go back to the Ivy League where he might be able to accomplish somethintg.? Instead, he keeps cashing a big paycheck, living large on the North Shore while burying the program deeper and deeper.
Would any other?major conference program put up with the pointless Carmody experiment ?? I'm not even sure many mid-majors would have tolerated the irrelevancy that he has saddled the program with.
And while I have generally been a fan of President Bienen, he should quit protecting his buddy BC and let the new AD start the arduous task of finding somebody to build a respectable basketball program.?

Yeah, Minnesota and Wisconsin just renewed the reciprocity agreement last year--but not before the University of Minnesota threatened to pull out. The deal provided that students would pay the in-state tuition rate for their home state. Thus, because the U of M had higher tuition than UW-Madison, Wisconsin kids were paying less to go to the U than native Minnesotans. (Likewise, Minnesotans paid more to go to Madison than native Wisconsonites but it was still less than UW out-of-state tuition.) The State of Wisconsin paid a make-up amount to the State of Minnesota every year, but it went to the state's general fund as opposed to the U. So the U threatened not to renew unless the system was fixed. Now I think the system is the same as before except that the Wisconsin make-up amount is paid to the U instead of the State of Minnesota. Minnesota has tuition reciprocity with Wisconsin and North Dakota (and perhaps South Dakota too), but not Iowa. In any event, it's not much of a di
fference-maker for athletes on scholarship, except that there are lots of Wisconsin kids going to Minnesota and lots of Minnesota kids going to Madison in the general student populations.?
?
Bo got two or three of the top Minnesota players this year (including Jordan Taylor and four-star Jared Berggren), with another star going to Iowa, and I think there are zero Minnesota kids in Tubby's first full class. However, recruiting heats up around ninth or tenth grade for these top kids, and Tubby didn't get to Minnesota until their senior year. Plus, I don't think too many Gopher fans are crying about Tubby's first class--top 20 by virtually all accounts and possibly top-10 according to some. Still, Berggren would have been a nice get, especially after losing Jon Leuer to Bucky last year and several others to UW and Michigan State over the past several years.?
