After the Northeastern shutout, I gathered my three children about and
decreed that if Northwestern defeats Ohio State on Sept. 22 I would
declare a school holiday.
That next Monday, the 24th, each of them would be excused from school
and we would proceed to Disneyland, I said.
I also announced that in the event of a Northwestern victory I would be
only too glad to walk directly into the principal's office and explain
to her why, exactly, I was yanking my three children out of school for
the day.
This occasioned much glee.
The glee was dampened, of course, when I allowed as the Wildcats have
defeated the Buckeyes only twice in my lifetime. However, since I am an
Ohio native and was in attendance on both occasions (Columbus, 1971;
Evanston, 2004), I reminded the children that I was therefore an expert
on the subject of Wildcat victories over the Buckeyes. And if
Appalachian State could rise up and smite Michigan, the time had come to
expect victory in Columbus, I told them, as idiotic as that might appear
to those more reasonable. Like their mother, who went to Berkeley, and
who fully expects the children to be in school, as usual, on the 24th.
By the way, speaking of rising up and doing the smite thing, the game
on the 22nd is problematic. It's Yom Kippur. All suggestions, advice,
direction about whether or not to wear purple to the synagogue that
morning: of course welcome. As well as whether I should furtively check
the score during services.
Also welcome: advice, suggestion, direction about tickets to the
Wildcats-Buckeyes game. Not for me. (!) High school friends of mine in
Dayton who are fundamentally decent people, if adherents of the state
religion of Ohio, Buckeye Football, looking for two. Top row of the Shoe
OK. They just want to get in. Face value, of course ...
Purple to Pasadena!
Alan
