The trend nowadays is definitely towards FieldTurf - Michigan had it
installed at least 3 years ago (when NUMB traveled in 2004 they already had
it). NU has it installed on one of the practice fields on the east side of
Ryan Field and rumors have it that it is being considered for the field. In
fact, many schools in the B10 have FieldTurf, including UM, Indiana,
Wisconsin, and Illinois. I wouldn't be surprised to see it at NU soon. It
has the advantage of easy care/maintenance yet feels much like regular grass
and gives more than the old AstroTurf (and even regular grass when it gets
frigid and the ground is as hard as a rock). We'll see, though, but today
Ryan Field looked great in person with its natural grass.
