I think A-Rod would rather own a ballclub than a World Series ring. As
excited as I was to have witnessed--in good box seats that I have for five Yankee
games every season--A-Rod's 500th career HR, I was equally appalled by the
self-aggrandizing way in which he and Scott Boras horned in on the World
Series and on the imminent naming of Girardi as the Skipper by preemptively
announcing he was opting out. It appears that as great a player as he is, he will
never truly understand what it takes to be a winning athlete. Scott Brosius,
who wasn't 1/10th the athlete A-Rod is, was a tremendous clutch player and a
wonderful teammate and clubhouse presence. As much as I hate to see the
Yankees lose A-Rod's incredible production, there isn't a lot else I--or I have
a feeling most Yankees and most Yankee fans--will miss about Mr. "Me". He
can't hold Derek Jeter's jock as a true Hall of Famer in my book.
