Stephen,

Our "down cycle" has now hit a new low, as Minny loses to North Dakota State--at home.?? That ought to really give Big Ten bashers an excuse to knock our favorite conference.

Today's just another example of why I don't think you
can point to the BTN for hurting the league in the
polls.

But in the middle of Pac 10 country today, on a day
when the Big Ten has more games than usual for the
middle of the conference season, I can find ...

* Michigan @ Illinois - National
* MSU @ Ohio State - National (ESPN2 is mirroring any
where ABC misses for regional)
* Iowa @ Purdue - National
* PSU @ Indiana - National

Plus, if I have satellite, I get two more Big Ten
games as part of the basic package and if I upgrade to
sports tier, I also had NU's game Friday night.

Contrast that with the league everyone agrees is the
strongest - and which gets by far the most love (over
lurve?) in the polls - the SEC. For their games, I
find ...

* Florida @ Kentucky - National
* Auburn @ LSU - National

None others available on sports tier or satellite
basic.

For such big games as Tennessee @ Alabama or to watch
the upset brewing with Vandy @ USC, I need to pay
extra for GamePlan.

So I'm not sure we can blame the BTN for lessening
coverage and hurting us in the polls. It may lead to a
few less NU, IU or Minny games in NYC for fans without
satellite, but it's not keeping us from the pollsters.

I think we're just in a down cycle now where we lost
respect based on last year's BCS. Even though we were
2-1 vs. the SEC on their home turf in last year's
bowls, they're focusing on the Gators-Buckeyes. Then
the AppState loss hurt further.

Is it fair? No. OSU, Michigan, PSU and Illinois should
all be top 25 teams now. Wisky was a legit top 25 team
before injuries. The Bucks have five games left
against teams with a combined 25-10 record, so if they
can run the table, they will have earned that title
game spot. I just dunno if they can make it through
unscathed. Even in a down year, there's still no easy
wins in Big Ten play - just like the SEC.

GO CATS!!!
