While I suspect that is why he turned down the Oriole job, the question is did the Yankess have an understanding with Giradi to hire him after Torree was gone at the end of '07 (assuming they wouldnt win the WS this year)?? Doubtful--they did offer Torree a 1 year contract, which I suspect if Giradi had known that in advance, he would have excepted the Oriole job

Still my bet is that they hire Joe over Mattingly--experience counts for a lot with?the Yankees and they know they would have a good one with Joe even if he isn't as popular as Mattingly--What he did with the Fish was terrific and his leadership skills?as captain of the Cubs also must weigh in--(Wonder if George's assisatant?coaching tenure for NU football will have an influence??? !!!--LOL)
