I suspect that he was joking. If he didn't value education, why would he
have stayed around to get his degree (Communications Studies)?

But maybe there are some on this list who happened to take some classes with
Barry and could vouch for his study habits, or are at least familiar with the
major and can attest that it requires some reading to graduate. As I recall,
he had the reputation of being a hard worker on the field. Why would he not
also be a hard worker academically? In my experience anyway, those character
traits tend to carry over into all areas of activity.

I often use news.google.com to see news about Northwestern and about alums.

Here is one item that came up in regards to Barry Cofield(NY Football
Giants), which was very disturbing.

Giants DT Barry Cofield: 'I Haven't Read a Book Since Elementary School'

Even if it is in jest it does not make NU look good. He did get his degree,
which could be a positive or negative depending on how you look at it.

Maureen met Barry at the women's football camp held at NU and he was very
well spoken. He definitely had the Barry White voice going on and could be a
radio DJ after his NFL career.

As Chuck alluded to...

I understand and agree with his decision, but our basketball team will be
much worse than normal without him.

We are headed for Detroit on Friday morning to see the Cats. I predict
beautiful weather for the game ;-)
