In today's NY TIMES (Roy: Don't have the URL address), there is an article
on the first BCS Poll Standings entitled "Topsy-Turvy Season Faces More
Flips". The writer, Pete Thamel, comments a couple of times on the low esteem in
which Big Ten is held this year, and states that "[i]f OSU wins out and plays
for national title, it is unlikely that a Big Ten team will land in the Rose
Bowl." He then goes on to state that if U of Mich finishes 9-3 (i.e., with
loss to Buckeyes in final game of season), "there is little chance they
would be in the top 14" and even less chance for another BT team to sneak in.
Thus, the 'Cats chances of going bowling may depend on winning a minimum of
5 out of next 6 games, so we can finish at 8-4. Otherwise, unless one of the
teams in front of us collapses (IU?), there may not be enough slots left. I
am not even counting MSU in this equation, since we beat them, although I
have enough "faith" in bowl selection committees, that I am sure Sparty would
be taken over us, if we finish with similar records (and their overall record
is better than ours at the moment).
