Is the rest of the Big Ten really saying "if we could only get rid of Northwestern things would be much better"? That is a sack of hooey.
Why do you think the faculty and non-revenue sports at Notre Dame wanted to joing the Big Ten and only football did not? It was because the Big Ten is more than just a football-men's basketball conference.

The Big Ten Conference is an association of 11 world-class universities whose member institutions share a common mission of research, graduate, professional and undergraduate teaching and public service. Intercollegiate athletics has an important place within the mission.
Having talked with current/former football and men's basketball players at NGN and FBC functions I respect the caliber of student they are. I would not want to do anything to water this down. As an engineer I also love it when I see players in Tech.
Are a few wins worth potentially damaging NUs reputation?
As for the "cheating" quote I truly believe that universities must slow down the slide into professionalism of college sports. Northwestern, Stanford, Duke, Rice, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, etc. are the moral compass for college athletics. If those schools start to ease eventually schools like Alabama will accept students that can't even color within the lines.

"cheating".
<I say it's hypocritical for NU to accept the financial rewards of being in
the Big Ten--rewards earned almost entirely by our conference-mates--and yet
refuse to make the same level of commitment. We can continue to hope and
pray for 1995-style lightning in a bottle--and we may catch it from time to
time--but such moments will be vastly outnumbered by such debacles as we saw
in Columbus two weeks ago.
RIGHT ON, ARTHUR!
What is wrong with a kid being a little unfocused out of high school,
entering the military to get his act together, muster out and spend a year
or two getting his academics and attitude in order while he stars at
football, and then going to a big time college like Northwestern? Why
should we automatically toss off such individuals as losers? I have never
suggested that we toss academic standards out the window. I have said
lighten up in a few cases. If NU could get a consistent winner and draw
better crowds, then we could lure more of those academic-athlete types away
from places like Duke, Stanford, and Wake Forest. And it's not just
athletes. Remember how applications soared after the '95 season?
