<There is a big, big range between NU's current standards, and becoming a
"JUCO Haven". And tell me again why relaxing our own standard constitutes
"cheating".
<I say it's hypocritical for NU to accept the financial rewards of being in
the Big Ten--rewards earned almost entirely by our conference-mates--and yet
refuse to make the same level of commitment. We can continue to hope and
pray for 1995-style lightning in a bottle--and we may catch it from time to
time--but such moments will be vastly outnumbered by such debacles as we saw
in Columbus two weeks ago.
RIGHT ON, ARTHUR!
What is wrong with a kid being a little unfocused out of high school,
entering the military to get his act together, muster out and spend a year
or two getting his academics and attitude in order while he stars at
football, and then going to a big time college like Northwestern? Why
should we automatically toss off such individuals as losers? I have never
suggested that we toss academic standards out the window. I have said
lighten up in a few cases. If NU could get a consistent winner and draw
better crowds, then we could lure more of those academic-athlete types away
from places like Duke, Stanford, and Wake Forest. And it's not just
athletes. Remember how applications soared after the '95 season?
