Here's what has changed on this list.
It used to be about a shared experience and a love of NU sports.
It now appears that at least some would like it to become another front in
the culture wars.
I can get plenty of conservative/liberal bombast from any number of sources.
What has been special about this list is the respect and tolerance that most
of the folks have had for those who didn't share their point of view.
Anyone who has been on this list for any length of time already knows what
everyone else's politics are anyway. Those who are new to the list should
get a pass so that everyone else can get to know them too, but once you've
been here a while, show some better manners. Some will agree with your
political views and some won't, but at the end of the day most of us really
want to talk about what we have in common (NU sports) not what we have in
difference.
I'm posting this message because I still have hope, but I'm growing tired of
wading through the political dreck and personal attacks to get to what I
originally joined this list more than ten years ago to read.
Jeff

Two opinions: Bush is a profound failure, and he is a conservative. Both
are debatable. The president's atrocious spending and his big-brother No
Child Left Behind program are both pure liberalism. I suspect NU's faculty
is more elitist than it is liberal, although it no doubt is the latter, too.
Elitism seems inherent at Northwestern. There certainly was a lot of it when
I attended and provides the one bad memory I have of the school. Some of
what I read here tells me that nothing has changed.
