[NU Sports] AD Replacements

As others have already said, Murphy's potential hiring very good news.
You can complain all you want about how BAD athletics are at NU, but as the
old say goes, money talks, and everything else walks.
The Packers are one of the premiere organizations in the NFL. They are a
small market team that has a shot at the superbowl this year.
They could have their choice of candidates and have several in their own
organization. The fact that they appear to be going outside their own
organization for person who has no NFL management experience speaks volumes
of their opinion of what Murphy has accomplished at Northwestern as well as
at Colgate.
If he does get the job, it will be sad to see him go, but the circumstances
couldn't be more flattering to NU. He is not leaving for another college
job. An NFL team has told the world that they felt that the guy running the
NU football program was their best choice to run one of the most prestigious
NFL organizations in the league. Clearly something good is going on at NU.
If he does get the job, I'm sure that he will leave the organization with the
same class and professionalism that he demonstrated on the job. If he
doesn't already have an internal candidate that he feels can take over the
position, I'm sure he will at least have a list of external candidates for
Bienen to review so that the progress that he has made can continue. For all
we know, he may have already have someone teed up. The first thing the best
executives do is groom their replacement.
Jeff

I think Murphy is well-positioned to be of assistance in identifying
potential candidates as his successor. Murphy is on the board of the
National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, so he's in a
position to know the membership and probably could help identify a few
up-and-comers.
