I agree completely. 
 Mark Murphy is one of the best things to happen to the Northwestern
sports program in my lifetime.
 I understand completely, by the way, the frustration over the
basketball team's ongoing and inexplicable ineptitude, and the
disappointment over the football team's 6-6 (shoulda been 7-5) season.
 That said, the Northwestern athletic department is miles-miles-miles
ahead of where it was when most of us on this list were students. The
Wildcats compete for the Big Ten championship in almost all the
non-revenue sports. The swimming and wrestling teams produce
All-Americans. And the women's programs, as was pointed out, have surged
to the nation's elite ranks. 
 That is all on Murphy -- to his great credit.
 Next year's football team will be 8-4, or better. 
 The basketball team ... well, I wish I knew.

Having met him and heard him speak at several alumni Sports Nights  held
by the NU Club of NY, an annual event, I think it would be a major loss
for  the University if Mr. Murphy does leave.  His life experiences and
unique  "skill set" (a phrase I really hate), including a law degree and
stint at the Department of Justice, not to mention playing on a Super
Bowl championship team, make him a "Renaissance Man" in the best sense
of the word.  He is a great representative for NU and has led our
Athletic Department to some great heights.  
Hopefully, he won't go up to the Frozen Tundra.
