Bienen and the board run the university.

They understand the value of a competitive football program in offering the
same sort of student experience as Duke and Stanford. Whether the profs like
it or not, Bienen and the board know you have to have a good football program
to attract the kids who meet the requirements AND have parents able to pay
the tuition.

They also understand how going to bowl games affects alumni giving.

Last time we looked, RW was paid very well. This isn't a question of money.
Just time.

PF is probably the best paid coach for his experience in Div I. As he proves
that he can actually do the job, I'm sure he will get paid better. Kudo's to
both him and Murphy for being willing to take the risk.

Murphy appears to be a significant upgrade from previous AD's. NU is winning
national championships and appears to be a magnet for talented female
athletes.

I'm a little puzzled by his patience with the sorry state of basketball, but
I believe he is on the right track with football.

Jeff

The athletic department. Zero marketing, a microscopic presence in the
Chicago sports media, miserable game day services (traffic control, parking,

concessions). This group has failed miserably. I will predict, however,
that
they will excel at getting out the season ticket renewal forms quickly, and
they will cash each of our renewal checks faster than Tyrell Sutton hits a
hole

Chuck is so right on about this, the faculty (which controls the university,
make no mistake), is embarrassed about playing football (see U of Chicago
circa 1920), and only allows it if the administration does not get carried
away and pay the coaches, like market salaries. We are doomed.
