[NU Sports] Basketball

The loss to Brown was a disgrace. Brown is not a good basketball team. The
Cats played the first half as if they wanted to be in the dorm studying.
While they played much better the second half, their typical inability to
rebound (even though Brown doesn't have a guy over 6' 7"), the usual absence
of an inside game, and the ever-present cold hands from the three- and
foul-stripes cost them again.

It is time that Northwestern University either make a commitment to winning
football and basketball teams or get them the hell out of the Big 10. That
starts with a new football stadium and basketball arena on campus and the
ability to enroll a few academically marginal players who have the native
skill to learn but who may have not attended the best high schools.
Otherwise, we will toil in football mediocrity and basketball ignominy
forever. I'm not jumping on the sack Carmody bandwagon because not one
coach we've ever had has been able to recruit even a modicum of talent to
NU. When we have, they have a tendency to transfer out. This goes deeper
than coaching. If they began a concerted fund-raising drive for football
and basketball, they would raise a lot of money. There is no reason we
cannot compete with Duke and Stanford on basketball recruiting except our
pathetic facilities.
