[NU Sports] Attendance

Student attendance has always been distressingly low. And starting in 2003 or '04 (I think - this happened just after I graduated), NU tacked on an extra athletic ticketing fee to every student's tuition bill. In exchange, any student could get in for free to all sporting events (in all sports) by swiping their Wildcard. So whatever's keeping students away, it's definitely not money.

But students are definitely not the only problem. Even at the 2000 Michigan game, there was a lot of maize and blue in the crowd -- and that day, the student section sold out.

<Sure, winning goes a long way towards filling seats and we've talked the
attendance issue to death, but the final 2007 numbers are definitely
discouraging and show that something needs to be done.

A great team is the best answer. Another is building a new stadium, even if
it isn't any bigger than Ryan-Dyche. Build it on campus, which makes it
easier for students to get there, and provide adequate parking. Take the
lake if necessary and screw the tree-huggers. Or in this case, the water
foul.
