In the 1978 season opener, in future NFL head coach Rick Venturi's first game as head coach of the Wildcats, NU & UI tied 0-0 on a 100-degree day at Champaign. That was one of only two non-losses in Venturi's three years (1-31-1 total, 0-10-1 in '78, 1-10 in '79 & 0-11 in '80) & his only non-loss in Big Ten play.

I recall our two championship seasons in 1995 and 1996. Illinois was in
the middle of the season, and we finished each of those years against
Purdue. When I went to NU in 1970, I recall the Illinois game being the
FIRST conference game of that season, and we beat them, 48-0 (that's the
game that Paul Levinson also fondly recalls, but for a different
reason!). -- Jim
