[NU Sports] great, just great

The Kansas City Star article mentions "Mark Purdy, the estimable San Jose
sportswriter". Mr. Purdy, then known in his byline as "David Mark Purdy", was
also a quite "estimable" writer for THE DAILY NU back in the early '70's,
along with Gene Sunshine (then the Sports Editor; now NU's VP of Finance) and
David Israel, among others, including Yours Truly. Even though I was in the
College of Arts and Sciences, I wrote for two years for the DAILY, which was a
lot of fun. I had two exciting "beats"--Intramural Football (which meant I
got to arbitrarily do the "Rankings" of the teams, which meant inevitably that
certain frats or dorms were mad at me) and also "Big Ten Basketball",
although NU, of course, was at the bottom of the conference, which only had 10
teams in those days (PSU was not around to join us in utter futility in hoops.).

Mark Purdy was always a really good guy to be around, not to mention a good
sportwriter and columnist. I think he was the Editor when he was a Senior,
if memory serves.
