[NU Sports] 12th game blues

To me, as a loyal Cat fan, the 12th game means ONLY two things...

1) Six wins still gets you into a bowl game (assuming there are conference tie-in bowls to be filled, which in our league, is usually the case), and

2) 12 games means 4 non-conference foes, which means four teams like Duke, Northeastern, Nevada and Eastern Michigan.  We ought to be able to beat these kind of teams, and bully most of them into granting us more home games than they get.

Proper scheduling of the n-c games means a 2- or 3-win conference record still gets you into a bowl.

Which still means more practices (benefits the next season), and still benefits recruiting.

Heck, I'd argue for a 14-game schedule, if it meant 6 non-conference pushovers, and one conference win got you to a bowl.

In short, I like 'classic games', but I like bowl games better.

Maybe someday, when we are a USC-type powerhouse, I will want an awesome n-c slate.  But until we get there, I will stick with the weak n-c schedule.

Steven is correct: the 12th game was sold in part as a
ivalry-reviver that would allow more schedule
lexibility. But ... Penn State-Pitt nixed.
iami-Florida, nyet (Miami does fight, er, play
lorida INTERNATIONAL; oh goodie). Texas-Arkansas, no
ay.
And few seem to be adding good non-league games -- NU
ertainly is somewhat guilty of that, of course.
Now that I-AA games count for bowls every year, expect
o see a lot more of them, even if Auburn's skedding
f The Citadel a while back cost it a spot in the BCS
hampionship game.
Given that a total joke sked could cost a team a spot
n a BCS game, I'd expect the powers to try and feast
n low-level I-A teams, and this is what seems to be
appening; even Michigan, for years one of the tougher
kedders, appears to have joined the MAC. But then
loyd Carr said a couple of years ago that tough
on-con games were hurting his team's poll stance and
he like, so what can we expect?
Note, though, that USC's non-con slate has been
errific lately (Kansas State, Arkansas, Fresno State,
ebraska, N*** D*** of course) and that does seem to
ave hurt them much ...
