[NU Sports] Wibon

Maybe he meant because "Arizona beat my Northwestern team [last year for the
title]," which would be understandable, or maybe he misspoke when he said
"Arizona" and really meant to say "Tennessee," which also would be
understandable to me. There are some people out there, though, who don't
want to see the team that beat them advance, which is just stupid in my
mind, because an earlier exit for the team that beat you makes your loss
look even worse, while a great finish by the team that beat you makes your
loss look not so bad (you might even be able to argue that you were the
second best team in the running even if you lost in the quarter- or
semi-finals). I think most people on this list understand that but spite
clouds reason for some.

On a related note, that's essentially the same reason why I hate the
"o-ver-rat-ed!" chant when you're on the verge of knocking off a ranked
opponent. It's completely moronic, since it denigrates the play and
impending accomplishment of your team. Some people, though . . . .

I hope that you misheard or are mis-remembering, because it was Tennessee
who beat Northwestern this year. Even if Wilbon were referring to Arizona
beating NU in last year's WCWS, it doesn't quite make sense for him to use
it as a reason to root for Tennessee, who have now done the same thing. I
hope Kornheiser and PTI haven't fully succeeded in "dumbing down" a smart
guy like Wilbon.
