It would seem to me that we are trying Mr. McGee without the benefit of the
facts, by comparing his situation to these other individuals who had chronic
problems. Does anyone have the facts of what actually took place?
And I don't think it is fair to go back to his playing days and resurrect
his trouble with the law. These things, as far as I am concerned, unless
there is some direct relationship, should not be brought together.
It would be significantly different to me if he had two or three beers with
dinner and then drove through a check point and was slightly over the line
versus being stone-cold drunk and getting pulled over by a police man who
noticed his erratic driving (does anyone know what happened?).
Which was it? I have no idea. But regardless, he is a member of our family,
who may have some personal issues that need to be dealt with. He deserves a
degree of privacy as they work through the facts, and then at that point,
when they become public we can evaluate the course of action taken by the
University. I believe NU will handle it wisely and appropriately until I see
evidence otherwise. And I for one am glad, that I don't work for some of the
guys who are in a rush to fire McGee!
I certainly do believe in accountability for actions, AND I take drunk
driving seriously, but I also would appeal for due process and respect for a
member of our staff.
