Well, the Lane Kiffin rumor turned out not to be correct, although I've read
reports that say he was a runner-up. Tim Brewster has been hired as the new
University of Minnesota football coach. Brewster wasn't very high on most
people's radar, but it could turn out to be a very good hire. Until 7 a.m.
this morning he was the Denver Broncos' tight ends coach, and prior to that
he was with the Chargers. Before going to the NFL, he was Mack Brown's top
recruiter both at UNC and at Texas. He has never been a coordinator or head
coach, so Coach Fitz will have more experience in that department than at
least one guy in the Big Ten! Brewster was many Illini fans' pick to
succeed Turner but Zook was hired instead. (Brewster was a two-time All-Big
Ten tight end and captain of the Illini team that played in the 1984 Rose
Bowl, and his son Clint is a top-15 quarterback who has verballed to
Illinois. Apparently his youngest son is the #1-rated safety prospect in
the 2008 class.) There will be a press conference tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CDT)
to officially announce the hire. See http://www.gophersports.com/
