I respectfully disagree with both of you. Carmody has never done a good
job substituting. He always seems to use only 7 or 8 players and by the
end of the year the starters are worn out from playing all the minutes.
He seldom has used freshmen for meaningful minutes. This year is
different. He uses 9 players and substitutes much more liberally than
in past years. He also plays three freshmen for a substantial part of
the game. We do have a bench. It is just not as talented as it needs
to be and it is very young.
It is true that he played both Scott and Doyle for most of the game.
Neither player has a good sub who can do the things the starters can at
those positions. We actually have a much deeper bench than in previous
years. The trouble is that there are too few power players on the team.
That is where the talent is lacking on this team.

Because there is no talent on the bench. Northwestern has never had a
deep
bench.
