Good point Chuck on validation--Too many of us (myself included ) throw 
around supposed facts, without knowing their validity

However keep in mind a few things as well--Rose Bowl always gets a high 
viewership because of it being the oldest, most traditional game (i.e almost always 
Pac-10/BT--and until recently the conf champs of both -except when they had 
the no repeat rule for the BT in the 60's)--not to mention everyone wants to 
see the parade---New Year's  Day games will always get more viewership being a 
holiday , and traditional--(l can't ever remember not watchign at least a few 
games on New Years day--except when it came out on Sunday and they wrecked 
tradition by moving them to Jan 2nd so as not to compete with the NFL) . And of 
course the other colleges and conferences must think that ND has all of the 
extra fan base or they wouldn't allow them to  receive concessions that the evil 
empire gets. Even the old CFA agreeement recognized their influence.

As has been said here recently, it may not be fair, but it is hard to argue 
against  the fact that big money controlls so much of sports
