Was the Rose Bowl in 96 an "away" game for us? I was just reminiscing about
this the other day. By my reckoning, the 1996 Rose Bowl was the largest
gathering of NU football fans in history. I recall that the stadium was more
than half purple. The entire city of Los Angeles was apparently giddy about
Northwestern in the Rose Bowl, from purple de-icing fluid at LAX to Charlton
Heston parting the purple sea.
Is this an inaccurate recollection?
Yes, i would say it is accurate--however, having to travel to LA vs being
there (i.e.USC) --must have contributed to a feeling of an away game--not to
mention that USC plays there every other year, and none of our players had ever
played there before ( I don't think we had any PAC-10 transfers )--so there
were certain aspects of an away game ans well as home game -We also looked
so nervouse in the 1st quarter when USC marched right down the field -but just
think if the game had been played at Soldiers Field--I have to believe , it
would have felt a lot different for both teams--and could have made a
difference--
