I am not suggesting any answers--Just to say it must be awfully hard to
build a good hoop program, when you have had such a bad one for a long time, and
maintain the academic standards of a school like NU--Obviously there have been
successes at Stanford, Duke and Vandy. But we have tried big "name" coaches
-- an African-american coach, a younger upstart assistant , someone form the
Ivies, etc-etc. Nothing seems to work well. Tex Winter publicly
expressed a lot of frustration at the limited list of eligible recruits . Bill
Foster had taken Duke to the finals , but couldn't do much with us. The list goes
on and on. The only suggestion that I can come up with is that we must have
a lot of guys in out own backyard , particularly at the Chicago Catholic
schools, that are solid players and can meet the academic standards--I suspect we
lose many of these "eligible" guys to other nearby schools. Do we need a
head coach (not an assistant) who has great contacts with the local high school
coaches and can get a good pipeline going ? Not sure how much that might
help, but I can't suggest much else
