Good point about facilities. For certain we need to do something or drop
out of the Big 10 in basketball. I'm for letting Carmody have 1 to 2 more
years. Clearly he is an excellent coach who gets the most out of his
talent. Ball handling, for example, is far better under his tutelage than
has been traditional for NU teams, and it keeps us within reach in most
games. It is poor rebounding and shooting that pushes winning out of reach.
Improve those two areas, and we're in the NCAAs and maybe looking at a Big
10 title. There is more behind the bad recruiting than Carmody's inability
to appeal to parents and players. That, I suspect, he does quite well.
Yet, they ain't a comin'. Shiny, new facilities would be a big plus. So
would taking a chance with a few academically marginal players with good
attitudes toward education and the ability to shoot the trey or yank down 10
rebounds a game. That would kick us over the top.
