Brian,

Thanks for posting this.

It is a chilling story for anyone who has a kid in college.  To hear Brandon
tell it, it was his pride that led to the downfall.  He figured he had it
all under control, when clearly he was very much out of control.

There is a very smart kid from a very good family working for me who is also
trying to put his life back together after discovering that just being sorry
doesn't solve a drinking problem or erase a criminal record. I've known this
kid and his family for twenty years.  His parents are two of the best people
I know.  They worked for four years to adopt his nephew to get him away from
a drug-addicted mother.  I coached soccer teams with his dad, his younger
brother, and my youngest son.  He blew up his college career a semester from
graduation, blew up his engagement to a very nice girl, and spent some time
in jail.  He's attending AA, takes responsibility for his actions, and is
making good progress.  But he's not going to be able to afford car insurance
for a long time, he's got at least another five years before the felonies
can come off his record, and until then his employment and advancement
prospects are severely limited.  I think that he will get there, but he dug
himself a huge hole and will have to have a lot of support and patience to
climb out of it.

I pray every day for my kids and everyone else's kids that they are
listening to God and their parents rather than the temptations which suggest
that they know it all or that there are shortcuts to success.
