The recent discussion in the papers about the size of Harvard's endowment and the ability it has to pay for tuition is it so chose to do so raised an interesting point. Allegedly Harvard doesn't really care if the alums cough up some money. If they do, it means Harvard has to listen to them. Dartmouth is going through a similar fight because the wealthy alums want more say so about how Dartmouth is run and the Dartmouth administration and faculty don't want to hear about that. Maybe there is a similar mind set at NU. When Dr. Miller was President, he allegedly felt that getting individual alums to contribute wasn't cost effective and that it was better to go after a few major donors. Maybe that is why NU doesn't do more with the NAA.
