[NU Sports] Defensive Coordinator

At least in Michigan, there is a bit of ego going on here too. They feel
that this is one of the premiere jobs in the country and so they also feel
that coaches should be willing to give the University a discount both in
salary and expectations (facilities, budget, etc.) for the privilege to coach
here. Bo set a high standard in terms of commitment to the institution.
Both Moeller and Carr were on Bo's staff.

As you've said this is the first time they have really had to conduct a
serious search for a football coach since Canham hired Bo in 1968. So they
may be dealing with a little bit of sticker shock at the packages that top
coaches can now command.

Keep in mind that Johnson first made a name for himself at Georgia State,
winning a couple of national championships in Division I-AA, before going to
Navy, so it's going home in many respects.

I think the sorriest performance in collegiate athletics the last few weeks
have been the Ads at Michigan and Arkansas. It's obvious that UM doesn't
hire football coaches very often because they sure don't know how to run a
search - a more botched job I haven't seen this side of Fayetteville. Just
how many people will turn down both jobs before the schools will find
somebody to take them. It may speak volumes about not just the pressure
associated with both fan bases, but the state of the facilities at each
school (both are in need of substantial upgrade) and the difficulty of having
a next door neighbor/archrival who has been dominating the conference of
late.

I am really surprised that Johnson is leaving Navy, altho with 6 STRAIGHT
