[NU Sports] Insight cable offering BTN -- good news and bad news

The good news for me is that Insight has put the BTN on the digital tier in
Kentucky on the rationale that there are no Big Ten teams in Kentucky. Of
course, Louisville is an Indiana University market but that's another story.
For me, as a digital customer, it means I don't have to move to Direct TV
until the two new birds are active and the full list of HD channels are
active. What I don't know yet is how many channels we'll get or how many
games we'll get. I'll just have to wait and see. No official announcement
has been made in Louisville yet - the information has been released so far
on local blogs.

While it is good that Insight has decided to carry the BTN (for you, at
least), the issue with having it on extended (analog) cable is that there is
no possibility for overflow channels (due to the availability of
channels/bandwidth on analog cable). If you had digital cable and the BTN
was offered on that, then there is indeed the possibility of overflow
channels as there are many more channels available. This would have been an
advantage to putting the BTN on a digital standard or premium tier - any
subscriber to that service could get all available games.
Of course Insight is still a relatively small player in the midwest cable
game - Comcast and TimeWarner along with DISH network look to be duking it
out for the foreseeable future (Comcast has confirmed that it definitely
will NOT have the BTN to start the season). Hopefully once fans realize the
can't get this weekend's games they will begin to revolt and force some
negotiations.
