[NU Sports] OT: Chicago bid

Everyone,
The venue plan is at the Chicago 2016 website, as Jim Bendat has
already noted. That's your best source of what's going to be where, and
you can see that Northwestern's facilities would be bit players in any
2016 Games in Chicago.
Why? Lots of reasons, but perhaps the main ones are that 1) the Chicago
idea is to center as much activity as possible around the downtown
lakefront, and 2) every separate Olympic site requires security, and
security takes lots of money and other resources.
All that said: it's one thing if the Northwestern administration opts
to seize the moment (if, come 2009, the International Olympic Committee
so says that Chicago's moment is 2016) and try to capture the enthusiasm
of the Games by launching its own building program in Evanston. That is
a related but entirely separate conversation.
Best, Alan

Having worked at the aquatic center, I can tell you that it doesn't have
nearly enough seating. This, I suspect, would be a problem for any
facility at NU, save Ryan Field, which would probably only be sufficient
for preliminary soccer matches; soccer, track, and gymnastics are huge
draws, especially track & field, which is usually done in the (large)
main Olympic stadium.
