Is there any way that Welsh-Ryan could be torn down and a new arena built on
the site? I assume that United Center and whatever they now call "The
Horizon" (where DePaul plays) and I guess the new facility called The Toyota
Center (I'm still not sure where it is.) would be major venues for hoops and
other indoor sports, such as gymnastics and boxing, a new arena in Evanston (the
Ryan Center? the "'Cats Lair"? the "Bienen" Dome?) would sure be a welcome
addition. Even if the 'Cats had to play elsewhere for a couple of years, it
would be worth it to gain a world-class facility, so that this impediment to
making a run at an NCAA bid is removed once and for all. You could have, say,
gymnastics at the new Evanston arena, while Ryan Field hosts track or soccer
events, or the like. And Mustard's Last Stand could finally gain the
worldwide fame it deserves! This New Yorker, for one, would sure love to come to
Chicagoland for the Games in 2016 (and one of my law partners does legal work
for the Olympics, so I might even be able to get some good ducats).
Back in the early '70's I never thought I'd see the day when I would be
rooting for a "Mayor Daley" to upstage the "Big Apple", but I am pulling hard for
this to happen to a great city that I miss very much.
