[NU Sports] Joe Girardi

I guess if coach Paul Stevens or Tim Stoddard were going to step down Joe G
might be a possibility.
NU's Baseball problem is compounded by high tuition and limited scholarships.
Div IA Baseball has 12 rides as I remember, and has to spread those among 20-30
players. In the spring, I work with our local American Legion baseball team -
most good teams have walk-ons who eventually earn smaller percentage
scholarships. With a year at NU costing 50k + its hard to get a good prospect to
come to Evanston just to play, especially when they can play for the local U or
CC and be able to pay their own way [and quit when they get a better offer from
the pros].
As I recall, NU should have won the Big 10 last year, but lost out in the last
weekend to the eventual season winner Michigan. They had the unenviable task of
playing their first 19 games on the roadand started the Big 10 looking like a
doormat. They went 21-11 in Big 10 Play, finishing 2nd, not bad.
The down side of next year is that the Cats lost two of their top pitchers to
the pros - Dan Brauer and George Kontos spent the summer pitching in the minors.
The good news is that the Cats still have 7 pitchers on the roster and 4 of the
7 incoming frosh are also pitchers, including Matt Diedrich, who sported a 1.60
ERA at Carmel HS, Hawthorn Woods last year.
If Baseball is pitching and defense, the Cats should be back in the thick of the
race this year, and maybe they'll have a better season record so they get into
the NCAAs and join the Diamond Girls in their quest for NCAA gold?

NU's coach may develop players (or his assistants do) but he has never won a Big
Ten that I can remember. If Girardi was willing to take the kind of pay cut
necessary to come to NU that would be the biggest boost NU's baseball program
could ever get. Don't count on it.

Actually, I wouldn't dump our present manager, given his record of development
with players. The Cats have a bunch of guys in pro baseball, with several
pitchers poised to make upward moves next Spring.
No, I think Joe G. will be in Wrigley next year, and since the owner doesn't sit
in a box and bitch at the umpires during games, he'll do fine.
I don't know who the Marlins hoped to attract when they did hire Joe G, but he
hasn't been on the inside of anything since his hiring last winter.

If Girardi does leave the Marlins as expected, Maybe NU can
hire him as our
manager :)
Wishful thinking... elk
