[SPAM] [NU Sports] one down, one up

One thing I heard Fitz say is that starters will be required to play special
teams. I haven't noticed if they have other than Cobb but I suspect so.
With that said, you would expect better play out of them. Kickoff and punt
return averages are significantly lower than last year.

I am glad I was wrong about 49-10 or the like, wish
I'd be wrong about the result.
I am more on the Labbe/Truog side on this game than
Dennis' "sad"; though as a fellow Pennsylvanian I can
more than sympathize with him, especially as one who
will be sitting among those 106,000 Lion fans in State
College!
Conclusions:
1) As a fellow NU fan of mine noted, the defense seems
to have an attitude and a quickness not seen recently,
and I feel better about these guys than I have about
an NU defense since the heyday of Dwayne Missouri.
2) The final pick wasn't Kafka's or Lane's fault; it
was whomever called the play. Asking the young QB to
throw all the way back across the field like that for
a minimal gain is a bad risk, esp. against an
aggressive secondary.
3) We win the game if special teams f*ckups don't
happen. This is one element of the Walker/Fitz era
that I am tired of and needs to be changed
immediately. Please explain to me how Virginia Tech
(just to name one example) can have ace special
teamers year in and year out and NU has special teams
high schoolers would be ashamed of? Touchbacks are few
and far between, the punting is ordinary at best, and
the placekicking is appalling. Even during the Dark
Ages, kicking was an NU strength. Why not now? Our Big
Ten championships would never have happen with this
shoddy ST work. This is intolerable; it was, to me,
Walker's greatest weakness and I don't want to see it
continue. The returns, to be fair, were better Friday.
4) Somebody buy Sutton some Crazy Glue.
5) A friend whose opinion I respect said we just
should have run the ball (as at Illinois 2003) all
night and eschewed the pass. I do agree with Chuck
Herron: if we became a power ground-game team that's
just fine. We can do that in the spread, too, of
course. Especially with these QBs, I wouldn't pass
just for passing's sake; if we can run all day, fine.
Do so.
6) Can we run screens in the spread? If so, why don't
we?
7) Is Ward not ever open or just invisible to the QBs?
8) Deante Battle might be the best DB at NU since
Rodney Ray and William Bennett.
10) It's amazing how young Fitz looks on the sideline.
He looks 25, or less.
11) NU should never play another game a) on Friday, b)
at a WAC/CUSA/whatever school and c) against this kind
of team anywhere. Basta, WAC!
Beat Penn State!!!
