[NU Sports] Our non-conference schedule

Fellow Wildcat Faithful,

I'll admit I'm usually tempted to say that a school should be on our schedule
when they look decent and we look capable of beating them. However, since
contracts are signed as much as 8 years in advance, my strategy doesn't work
for NU over the long term.

What I really think we need to do is schedule non-conference opponents for
recruiting purposes. We compete every year for a very small number of
academically capable I-A football recruits. Therefore, it only makes sense to
schedule the schools we recruit against and then go out and beat them. That is
what will sway a kid from picking one of the other academic options.

That being said, I think the candidate schools are:
Stanford
Vanderbilt
Rice
Duke
Wake Forest
Boston College
SMU?
Tulane?
Virgina?

(?s indicate schools where I'm not certain they football players are students)

I wouldn't even include the service academies here because, although their
academics are good, I don't think our recruiting over laps very much. Plus, I'd
hate to be lumped in to the grouping with Notre Dame for scheduling service
academies to pad the schedule.

Victory & Honor,
Jim
