A topic that hasn't been discussed on this list is the absence of Kim
Thompson. Reports were that Kafka hooked up with him frequently last Spring and
at Camp Kenosha.
Then, Thompson goes down less than a week before the Miami game. That,
my friends, may be what we (and Kafka) are missing.
Let's face it, Herbert is more of a possession receiver, ala Schweigart,
Patrick and Musso.
While all these guys were excellent receivers, they they had Bates and
Philmore (save Scweigart) lining up with them. Even J.Fields provided speed the
last two seasons. The last word I heard that KT was out 4-6 weeks, or it could
be all season. Anyone hear anything about his condition?
Sadly, I must concur with the consensus that we will be a 2nd division
team. I forgot to give the list my prediction, but it was something in line of
27-17. I thought our offense would wake up, which leads me to my next
point...
It seems we have flashes of brilliance, but no "staying" power. For this,
we must wonder about our offensive line. As such, Sutton has averaged 90
yards a game, and without citing actual statistics, we probably are averaging
over 135 yards a game on the ground, maybe more as Kafka and Brewer have had a
lot of carries. I'm wondering if PF is going to get both Brewer and Kafka
on the field at the same time. Maybe in this fashion, teams will stop keying
on Sutton.
Defense: I'd love to say that performances vs. Miami and E. Michigan,
and the 2nd half of UNH will rescue us from a lousy season. Certainly, we are
better than we have been. But if we can't move the ball, sustain drives and
score points, that defense will wear down as our schedule toughens.
But one at a time. Nevada goes home after an 0-2 start; playing well at
Fresno, and then facing a simular fate as we did at Arizona St. last year.
More on this game later.
Still
Trusing the Plan, GO CATS!!! Eric
