Bravo, John! I wholeheartedly agree. We NU fans justly feel that NU is
what's right about college football. So why don't we see ND as a model of
what we'd like to become?
My conclusion is that it's little more than jealousy. Hey, we all know
members of the large and obnoxious ND bandwagon, but jealousy is an
unbecoming trait regardless of the excuses we may make for it. I wish NU
were a historical football power, with X national championships and Y
Heisman Trophy winners, and could remain an independent with the power to
negotiate our own TV contract. While that may never happen, I don't
begrudge Notre Dame for playing the hand they've been dealt.
(In the interests of disclosure, I happen to have a master's degree from
ND--which does not in any way negate the fact that 90% of my football
passion belongs to NU.)
