[NU Sports] Three pointer

I thought ESPNU did a good job of getting those interviews with so many
former coaches and it would have been nice to see some of the halftime
ceremonies. Don't forget the interview with Tammy Walker scheduled for
today's College Gameday.

I liked how Coach Fitz referred to "Northwestern" three or four times in his
post game interview. He did the same thing at his preseason press
conference. In other words, he seems to like to get the name out there with
a lot of pride. Always has the NU cap or shirt on. In the Fox Sports
preseason show where he had a suit on, an NU button was cleverly placed near
the top of the lapel to get on camera. There's not much "aw shucks" in the
guy. I feel like he knows that one of the secrets of overcoming the
media's unending perception of "poor old Northwestern" is to have unbending
pride in the program and to make no apologies for the past.

In fact, I've really seen less and less of the "poor old NU" banter in the
media over the past few years. It's been 13 years since we've had less
than 3 wins in any season (from 1976-1990 we had less than 3 wins in 12 of
15 seasons).

I also think the 3 points allowed is a significant achievement from where
we've been defensively in the recent as well as near-historical past. As
someone else mentioned, there was the Oklahoma shutout in 1997 (which still
looks great on our historic score table) and the 35-0 pasting of Wisky in
1995 but before that you have to go all the way back to 1978 to find a game
against a I-A opponent where we held someone to 3 points or less (the
dreaded 0-0 tie with Illinois).

Three points or less since 1960:

2006 24-3 Miami

1997 24-0 Oklahoma

1995 35-0 Wisconsin

1986 37-0 Princeton

1978 0-0 Illinois

1975 10-3 Northern Illinois

1975 30-0 Indiana

1971 28-3 Iowa

1970 48-0 Illinois

1966 3-3 Wisconsin

1965 20-0 Indiana

1965 9-0 Iowa

1964 7-3 Oregon State

1962 45-0 Illinois

1961 45-0 Boston College

1960 19-3 Oklahoma

1960 21-3 Indiana

1960 21-0 Wisconsin
