[NU Sports] I don't hate the coaches ...

... Roy, I really don't. They seem like nice people
and are doing the best they can in a tough spot.

But if I had done as poorly at my job as Colby and
Brown have over the years, I'd have been rightfully
fired years ago.

I certainly have no desire to replace most of the
staff. The recruiting has been terrific, from what I
can see (though one never knows until the kids
actually play how good a class is). McGee's offense
looked just fine for about 36 minutes Saturday, so
maybe he's rounding into form and getting his legs.
And, though some of my NU friends are beginning to
grumble about Fitz, he's obviously the man for quite a
while.

But Colby and Brown ... college coaching is not a
field where jobs are guaranteed for life. Look at
Michigan: Carr didn't like what he saw, heave-hoed his
coordinators last offseason and he's in the national
title hunt. Or Tennessee: Phil Fulmer canned his
o-coordinator in midseason, brought back the highly
competent David Cutcliffe (what dunces they were at
Ole Miss to let this guy go) and UT is having a fine
season. Of course NU lacks the sheer talent of those
teams, but that makes the case for having the best
coordinators possible even stronger.

In no way do I want the duplicitious, double-talking
Barnett back in any way, or any one like him (I agree
the stepping-stone mentality is a disaster; those
pointing to Wake's success should note they have been
patient with Jim Grobe and it's paid off). But I do
want competent coaches, and having watched Colby and
Brown's units for years I think changes are called
for. I think many fair-minded people would agree, and
the evidence on the field strongly suggests so.
Midseason moves are not necessary, but I suggest the
shakeup start Nov. 19.
