We all want Fitz to succeed, but at this point it really does seem that he's
in over his head. Cats have been out-coached in every game they've played
(excluding the opener perhaps). This season is done. With our schedule, we
will be lucky to win one more game and that may be a stretch (MSU desperate now
for a W and Illinois is improved).
Of course, Fitz's job is secure for now (anybody know length of his
contract??), but if the team is performing at the same level at midpoint next season,
then his future will really be under serious review. I don't care that he's
one of the best ever to wear purple? I don't care that he's an engaging,
enthusiastic guy? He may have -- as some of us feared last July -- simply
taken on too much too soon. Admittedly, he is not getting help from his
assistants and I expect we'll see major staff changes after the season. That may be
a step in the right direction. I hope so, but it will not suppress my
disappointment with the play of a Wildcat team that had most starters returning
and which should have generated a much better record than the 2-10 or 3-9 where
we are now headed.
