[NU Sports] SC Game

I would like to see some comparative stats on this for 2006 (Chicago TV ratings, radio ratings, column inches of coverage), and I have always trusted the old rubric of 'the subway alumni', but this year, at least, it seemed that the team from South Bend was much less a presence on the Saturday evening newscasts, certainly on Chicago sports talk radio, and in Tribune coverage (the Sun-Times, though its circulation is collapsing, still gives them an inordinate amount of coverage). They were definitely less-discussed during the long interlude between their last meaningful game (MSU) and this game. Part of that has to be the poor caliber of their opponents (part may also be the sports talkers not wanting to hype a product that is on a competing network).

That's why it was somewhat painful to hear them being talked about this week (of course, their was no Big Ten product to discuss this week). I would also expect Disney/ABC/ESPN to be less than pro-Irish, since that team is owned by NBC.

Hopefully, a newer generation of Big Ten alums and fans are starting to demographically outnumber the older 'subway alumni' types. It was always my understanding that the 'subway alumni' phenomenon was, in part, a pride thing on the part of Irish-Catholic folk, and partly a reaction to some strong anti-Catholic (and anti-Irish and anti-Italian) sentiment in the earlier part of the century (discussed nicely by Murray Sperber in his book 'Shake Down the Thunder'.)

We can hope that as suburbanization/assimilation continues, and the various 'anti-' factions keep diminishing, more and more Chicagoans (and people nation-wide) will become fans of their Big-Ten Alma Maters, and/or their local Big-Ten schools - then the Evil Empire will be consigned to its rightful place - a scattering of alumni, a scattering of local fans - kind of like a Tulane of the Midwest.

Given that Mr. Mussed-burger worked in Chicago all those years, its pretty
obvious that he was infected with Irishitis - something that 3/4 of Chicago has
and probably will never be rid of until the Roman Catholic Church pulls up
stakes and moves out of the city.

After all, there are more N**** D*** alums living in Chicago today than ever
attended 'neith the Golden Dome. And that doesn't include all those living in
New York and Baltimore....
