There was a study a few years back that showed that the non-scoring
statistic that had the greatest correlation with winning basketball
games was defensive rebounding margin. More than assists, more than
offensive rebounds, more than shooting percentage. I don't remember the
exact numbers, but something like 80+% of the time, the team that gets
the most defensive rebounds wins the game.
