John:

Your stereotypical depiction of NY sports fans is really infuriating. I
didn't take Mike's passing comment as offensive, but yours certainly was.

Yes, we do care passionately about our sports teams--most of which are
professional. But, just by way of example, the NY Post has a College
Football/Basketball Columnist, Lenn Robbins, who presents a very good take every week on
the College Sports scene. The NY Daily News also has a similar column,
although the name of the writer (Dick somebody) escapes me at the moment. So,
too, does the Times also cover college sports in some depth.

And when the St. John's basketball team or Rutgers football team is doing
well, the coverage mushrooms. The entire Metropolitan area has been buzzing
about Rutgers for the past week.

As for Ray Knight's supposed comment, NY fans have probably forgotten more
about basketball than fans in almost any part of the country (save, perhaps,
Indiana) ever knew about the sport.

NY fans also are extremely knowledgeable and supportive of such non-team
sports as tennis, which is why the US Open is so staggeringly successful.

I could go on (Rangers sellouts; Giants and Jets passion; etc.), but have
better things to do than counter such vacuous thoughts. I'm not sure why you
decided to pick on NY, but your critique really is without merit and strongly
resented at this end. Somehow whenever you posted controversial opinions in
the past with which I strongly disagreed (or otherwise thought were
off-the-mark), I let them pass. But this one is just too ridiculous to ignore.
