You can change a number if you are wearing one of the lineman numbers and go
into an eligible position.
Guards sometimes move to FB, or Tight End, and then become eligible. They used
to wear a special pinny but then later changed to a new jersey to wear the
proper number.
Not sure if they've changed the rules about numbers, but they still have to
check in with the linesman to confirm their eligibility to catch the ball. At
least I think that's where the rules sit these days.
Where's the "ole Ref" when we need him
